Industrial noise control is the engineering work of finding out which plant is actually driving a noise problem, then designing, supplying and installing the enclosure, barrier, silencer or damping treatment that fixes it. Industrial noise assessment

Before anything is designed, the problem has to be understood properly. We carry out industrial noise assessments to establish where the noise is coming from, how much each source contributes and what the site is being measured against, whether that is an Industrial Emissions Licence limit, a planning condition or an occupational exposure duty.

Sound power measurement of individual plant is the part most often skipped, and it is the part that saves money. Treating every item of plant as equally responsible leads to over engineering. Establishing that two fans account for most of the exceedance means the mitigation can be targeted at two fans.

Acoustic modelling before anything is bought

Once every source has a measured sound power level, acoustic modelling puts them into a three dimensional model of the site and shows what each one contributes at the boundary and at the nearest homes. Mitigation options can then be tested in the model, at no cost, until the cheapest combination that reaches the limit is found. This is the step that separates a proportionate scheme from an expensive one, because it is the only way to know in advance that treating three sources will be enough and treating eleven is unnecessary. Industrial noise monitoring

We provide industrial noise monitoring on an ongoing basis for licensed sites, including annual compliance surveys, boundary monitoring at the site perimeter and long term unattended monitoring where a condition requires it. Where a complaint has been made, monitoring is designed to capture the conditions being complained about rather than a convenient daytime average.

Noise control engineering and industrial noise reduction

Reducing noise on a working site is an engineering problem constrained by access, process continuity and safety. Our engineers have delivered noise control inside live power stations and operating pharmaceutical plants, where the process cannot simply be switched off for the works. That experience shapes the design as much as the acoustics do.

Typical measures include acoustic enclosures, barriers, in duct and discharge silencers, lagging and damping treatments. Where a solution is specified we can supply and install it, then verify by measurement that it has achieved what was predicted.

Being able to supply and install as well as specify is the part that matters most to a site manager. Factory noise control and workplace exposure

Factory noise control usually has two drivers running at once, the licence limit at the boundary and the exposure limit on the floor. They are not the same problem and the cheapest solution to one is not always any help with the other, but a single measurement campaign can serve both if it is planned that way. Community noise complaints and noise pollution

Where the issue is noise leaving the site rather than noise within it, the assessment is against boundary and noise sensitive receptor limits. We model the propagation, identify which sources are audible at the receptor, and design the control needed to bring levels within the applicable limit. Complaint driven work is handled discreetly and with an eye on the regulatory relationship as well as the technical fix.

Noise pollution complaints rarely turn on the overall level alone. A tonal hum from a fan, an intermittent blowdown or a reversing alarm at night will generate complaints at levels that a broadband measurement would call compliant, which is why character assessment under EPA NG4 and BS 4142 is part of the work rather than an optional extra. Establishing the site contribution against the prevailing background usually needs environmental noise monitoring at the boundary and at the receptor at the same time.
