Whitegate Power Station

Whitegate Power Station is a 445 MW combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) generating station that plays a key role in supplying electricity to Ireland's national grid. Allegro Acoustics provides ongoing acoustic consultancy services to the station, including annual Industrial Emissions Licence (IEL) environmental noise monitoring and occupational noise monitoring, alongside specialist engineering support for complex noise control projects.

In addition to the annual monitoring programme, Allegro Acoustics was appointed to investigate and resolve high noise levels occurring during plant start-up. Environmental noise monitoring and detailed noise source investigations identified the dominant contributors to the elevated noise levels. SoundPLAN environmental noise modelling was used to evaluate mitigation options, leading to the design of bespoke silencers for the steam release valve and hogger, together with acoustic barriers to further reduce noise emissions. Technical support was also provided during installation within the live power station, followed by post-installation noise monitoring to verify the effectiveness of the mitigation measures.

The result is a long-standing partnership that supports Whitegate Power Station's ongoing regulatory compliance while delivering practical engineering solutions to complex acoustic challenges, helping the station minimise environmental noise and operate reliably.
