Allegro Acoustics provided acoustic consultancy services for 16 modular school projects delivered by Vision Built, supporting the development of a repeatable acoustic design suitable for modern modular school construction. The projects required the lightweight modular building system to achieve the acoustic performance standards set out in the Department of Education School Design Guide SDG 02-05-03.
The acoustic design addressed sound insulation between teaching spaces, reverberation control, internal ambient noise and rain noise through the lightweight roof construction. Sound insulation modelling was used to assess proposed wall, floor and roof build-ups and identify where additional acoustic measures were required. Particular consideration was given to the roof construction to ensure the required rain-noise criteria could be achieved.
Detailed recommendations were provided for wall, floor and roof constructions, together with suitable acoustic products and build-ups. Sound absorption assessments were completed for teaching and common spaces, with marked-up drawings defining the type, quantity and location of acoustic treatment required. Technical reports, product recommendations and drawing mark-ups were provided throughout the programme to clearly communicate the acoustic requirements to Vision Built and the wider project teams.
On completion, on-site sound insulation testing and acoustic commissioning were undertaken to verify the performance of the modular construction against the specified criteria. The programme provided Vision Built with a proven acoustic design approach that could be applied consistently across 16 school developments while demonstrating compliance with the Department of Education acoustic requirements.
