The Tannery Student Accommodation

Blackpitts, Dublin 8, Ireland

The Tannery is a 296-bed student accommodation development in Dublin 8, arranged around a landscaped internal courtyard. The development required a comprehensive acoustic design to provide appropriate sound insulation between bedrooms and communal areas while creating comfortable acoustic conditions throughout the residential and shared spaces.

Allegro Acoustics provided acoustic consultancy throughout the design of the development. The acoustic strategy addressed airborne and impact sound insulation, internal ambient noise, courtyard noise, building services noise and the interfaces between active communal spaces and adjoining student accommodation. The design was developed to meet the requirements of Technical Guidance Document E - Sound while providing a high level of acoustic comfort for residents.

Detailed acoustic recommendations were developed for walls, floors and other separating constructions, with particular consideration given to controlling noise transfer between bedrooms, circulation routes and shared spaces. The influence of activity within the landscaped courtyard was also considered to ensure appropriate noise levels could be maintained within surrounding accommodation.

The acoustic design provided the project team with a clear framework for achieving the required performance throughout the development, combining regulatory compliance with appropriate acoustic conditions across bedrooms and communal areas. The completed development was subsequently named Student Accommodation of the Year at the 2019 Irish Building and Design Awards.
