Ardcairn House is a 571-bed student accommodation development on Brunswick Street in Dublin 7. The scheme includes student bedrooms, study areas and a wide range of shared amenities, including a cinema, music room, gym, fitness suite, bowling alley and split-level common room. The mix of residential accommodation and active communal spaces required careful acoustic design to protect bedrooms from both external noise and noise generated within the building.
Allegro Acoustics carried out an environmental noise survey in accordance with ISO 1996 and completed the façade acoustic design using the methodology outlined in ISO 12354-3. Each cluster of student bedrooms was designed to achieve the sound insulation criteria set out in Technical Guidance Document E. Detailed consideration was also given to flanking noise transmission, junction and edge detailing, and noise from mechanical and electrical services. For the cinema and music room, Allegro developed detailed room-acoustic models using ODEON Room Acoustics software to assess the required acoustic finishes before construction.
Allegro provided ongoing support to the design and construction teams through technical reviews, site inspections and acoustic testing. This coordinated approach helped ensure that the acoustic design intent was carried through into the completed building, allowing active communal spaces to sit alongside the student bedrooms while maintaining appropriate sound insulation, internal noise levels and acoustic comfort.
