Summerhill Student Accommodation

Dublin 1, Ireland

Summerhill is a 374-bed student accommodation development in Dublin city centre requiring a comprehensive acoustic design to provide appropriate sound insulation between bedrooms and communal areas while creating comfortable acoustic conditions throughout the development.

Allegro Acoustics provided acoustic consultancy throughout the design of the development, with the acoustic strategy addressing airborne and impact sound insulation, internal ambient noise, reverberation control, room acoustics and building services noise. The design was developed to meet the requirements of Technical Guidance Document E - Sound while providing appropriate acoustic conditions within both residential and shared spaces.

Particular consideration was given to the double-height common room, visitor reception, café and movie room. Detailed room-acoustic modelling was undertaken using ODEON to assess reverberation and optimise the type, quantity and location of sound-absorbing finishes. Sound-insulation measures were also developed to control noise transfer from active communal spaces to adjoining student accommodation.

The acoustic design provided the project team with a clear framework for achieving the required performance throughout the development, combining regulatory compliance with appropriate levels of acoustic comfort across bedrooms, communal areas and other shared student spaces.
