Onyx is a 24-storey student accommodation development at Lancaster Circus in central Birmingham. Located close to Aston University and Birmingham City University, the scheme provides 1,023 student bedspaces within a prominent high-rise development beside one of the city’s busiest roads.
Allegro Acoustics provided acoustic consultancy services throughout the design and construction of the project. The acoustic strategy addressed compliance with Part E of the UK Building Regulations, together with the wider sound-insulation, internal-noise and building-services requirements needed to provide suitable living and study conditions for residents.
An environmental noise assessment informed the façade design, including the specification of glazing and ventilation requirements to control road traffic noise within student bedrooms. The internal design addressed sound separation between bedrooms, corridors and shared spaces, as well as noise from mechanical and electrical services.
Allegro Acoustics also completed construction-stage site inspections and acoustic testing to verify that the specified performance standards had been achieved. The assessment and verification work supported certification under BREEAM Hea 05: Acoustic Performance and Pol 05: Reduction of Noise Pollution.
The completed acoustic design supported the delivery of a large-scale student accommodation development that combines regulatory compliance, BREEAM certification and appropriate levels of privacy, comfort and acoustic performance for residents.
