Connacht Rugby Stadium is a major sports and events venue in Galway undergoing redevelopment to provide modern spectator, hospitality and support facilities. The development required clear acoustic design criteria to provide appropriate levels of sound insulation, acoustic comfort and building services noise control across the different spaces within the high performance centre.
Allegro Acoustics was commissioned by TOBIN Consulting Engineers to develop the acoustic design criteria for the project. A comprehensive Acoustic Criteria Report was prepared covering hospitality suites, bar and café areas, changing facilities, offices and other support spaces. The report established criteria for internal ambient noise levels, sound insulation, reverberation control and mechanical services noise.
Detailed recommendations were provided for internal walls, floors and doors, together with requirements for sound-absorbing finishes and the control of noise from internal building services and external plant. The assessment also considered the potential for wind-induced noise from the stadium structure, with practical recommendations developed to minimise the risk of whistling and other unwanted aerodynamic noise.
The Acoustic Criteria Report provided TOBIN and the wider project team with a clear framework for acoustic performance throughout detailed design and construction, helping ensure a consistent and practical approach across the redeveloped stadium.
