Dublin Port operates a fleet of pilot boats used to transfer maritime pilots to and from vessels entering and leaving Dublin Port. Given the proximity of crew to the vessels’ engines and the varying operating conditions experienced during normal duties, a detailed assessment was required to evaluate occupational noise exposure.
Allegro Acoustics was commissioned by Dublin Port to complete an occupational noise assessment of the operational pilot boats in accordance with the Control of Noise at Work Regulations. On-board noise measurements were undertaken across areas routinely occupied by crew, including the main cabin and locations close to the engines.
Measurements were completed at a range of vessel operating speeds to establish how noise levels varied under representative working conditions. The results were used to evaluate potential employee noise exposure and identify areas or operating conditions where additional noise management measures may be required.
The assessment provided Dublin Port with a detailed understanding of the noise environment experienced by pilot boat crews and the technical information required to support the ongoing management of occupational noise exposure.
