Ballyroan Library is an award-winning public library in Rathfarnham, Dublin 14. The building includes open-plan library areas, study rooms, technology spaces and a full-height central atrium used for public talks and community events. The range of uses created a need to balance speech intelligibility, acoustic comfort, privacy and control of noise from building services.
Allegro Acoustics provided acoustic consultancy services from planning and detailed design through to construction and commissioning. The scope included internal sound insulation, room acoustic design, reverberation control and M&E noise assessment. Particular attention was given to the central atrium and other open-plan areas, where the acoustic finishes needed to support clear speech without compromising the architectural design. Allegro also coordinated the acoustic requirements with Box Architecture and the wider design team as the project developed.
The completed acoustic design created comfortable library and study environments while allowing the atrium to function successfully as a space for public speaking and community events. The acoustic solutions were integrated into the architecture and supported the quality and usability of the completed building, which received the 2013 RIAI Award for Best Public Building.
